Deuteronomy 17:19 – And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them:
Studying the Bible is often confused with reading the Bible when in truth there is a vivid difference. But in spite of this difference they are both necessary and work hand and hand in our walk with the Lord.
2 Timothy 2:15 – Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Reading the Bible though fast – is not the best way to really learn and understand what it is saying. I understand it is good to read your Bible though at least once a year but why read somethingt so fast that you don’t grasp a true understanding of what certain parts are saying? It is not a race!
Take your time when reading the Word. There is so much meat and life changing material between the two covers that even the fastest and greatest reader couldn’t completely understand it all in a few settings. We must ‘read’ our Bible but we must also ’study’ what were reading.
Time & time again I hear “Bro. David, how do I study the Bible?” – So, although there are tons more, I have complied some bible reading tips that have been greatly helpful during my Bible reading. Keep in mind that some of the bible tips are not easy to always do but try practicing them each time and you will find it easier each time.
Top 5 Bible Reading Tips:
- Remove hindrances – Cut your phone off, turn the music off and find a quiet, private place. So many times you will find yourself preparing for a good Bible readying time and something will come up to distract you from your readying and at times will make it impossible to get any good studying and reading done.
- Truly Understand the Scripture – Compare relevant scriptures with each other so you know the aspects and differences. Again, take your time. So many times we find our self knowing a certain scripture but do not really understand the true meaning of what it is saying and end up confusing ourselves.
- Apply what you read to yourself – We should be able to apply each and every word to our life each time we read. I read the Old Testament and the New Testament alike and could apply or relate each story to my life. That is why it’s there!
- Write down all questions you have – write down all your questions and continue reading. If you still are confused about something – find the answer. Reading the Bible will bring up questions! It’s a good thing – But don’t stumble across a certain scripture and stop reading because your answer and true understand could be just a couple verses or chapters ahead.
- Take Notes – I am still using notes I took 4 years ago and assume I will continue. Make bullets, short quotes or whatever you feel is best for you but taking notes will always help when reviewing what you have read.
There are tons of bible reading tips that you can utilize while reading the Bible, these are the five that I feel the most importance in my experiences. I look forward to posting more tips for how to study the Bible in the future.

I also listen to the Bible. I found a free audio Bible at http://www.FaithComesByHearing.com. About 70% of the Bible is in narrative form. Half the world’s population cannot read, but they can listen. And they grow in their faith just like because God made His Word for oral cultures too.
